Does Freon gas harmful to the human body?
Question:I observed some repairmen used Freon gas in repairing refrigerators particularly when the refrigerator freezer is not working. Can this gas be harmful to the body if exposed too much?
Answers:
Freon: "A trademark used for a variety of nonflammable gaseous or liquid fluorinated hydrocarbons employed primarily as working fluids in refrigeration and air conditioning and as aerosol propellants."
Freon is still in use today. Your refrigerator and AC units most likely still use freon-22. Yes it can be harmful to folks, but can be ventillated from the house very easily.
From the MSDS:
Inhalation of high concentrations of vapor is harmful and
may cause heart irregularities, unconsciousness or death.
Intentional misuse or deliberate inhalation can be fatal.
Vapors are heavier than air and pose a threat of suffocation
if trapped in enclosed or low places. Liquid contact can
cause frostbite. Inhalation may cause dizziness, headache,
confusion, incoordination, and loss of consciousness.
Immediate effects of overexposure by inhalation may include
central nervous system depression with dizziness, confusion,
incoordination, drowsiness or unconsciousness. Gross
overexposure may cause irregular heart beat with a strange
sensation in the chest, "heart thumping", apprehension,
lightheadedness, feeling of fainting, dizziness, weakness,
sometimes progressing to loss of consciousness and death.
Other effects include fatality from gross over-exposure.
Short-term overexposure by skin contact may cause frostbite,
if liquid or escaping vapor contacts the skin. Repeated
and/or prolonged exposure may cause defatting of the skin
with itching, redness or rash.
Acute contact with the vapor or aerosol may cause eye irritation
with tearing, pain or blurred vision.
yes it is, and thats why they DONT use freon anymore!
well i would think it would freeze your skin, someone I grew up with inhaled in for the first time and he died from it freezing his lungs, so be careful!
Freon was outlawed in the 80's
IN A NUT SHELL NO. There is only a few oz. in a refrigerator. It is suppose to be recovered by the tech. for reprossing. If he didn't use a seperate pump and recovery tank, report him.
yes freon could burn your hand and is dangerous under abnormal pressures,i know of a repairmen who got second degree burns from freon.
