Did I rendered my lawn mower useless? or I just have to replace the cutting blade?
Question:I accidentaly run my lawn mower over a pipe sticking out of the ground and as soon as the blade hit it, It turned off. I re-started but it vivrates now. Is it the blade that got out of balance because of the hit? or the shaft may have been bent? Is the shaft easy to replace or I should buy a new one? Thank you.
Answers:
Most likely all that bent was the blade.I did this myself..changed the blade and three summers later i am still using the same mower....it is possible that the shaft might be bent though...if the shaft is bent it would be cheaper to buy a new mower
first check the square key on the shaft you may have sheared it or bent it
First things first, change the blade definitely. If the vibration goes away, that was it. Unless your good at mechanics, changing the shaft is half the problem, the other half is getting the part. You could get a estimate from a small engine repair shop. Or you could go to the local thrift shop and hunt for a el cheapo replacement mower.
Could be one or the other or both. I would guess both. But, only a lawn mower repair shop will be able to tell you for sure. I wouldn't try to do this myself because if it is the shaft, the engine is likely to need replacing.
surely the blade is bent and hopefully not the shaft, but it can be repaired also. good luck
It's probablt just the blade. The key that connects the flywheel to the shaft might be bent, but not sheared completly. Either of those is easy to fix. A one cylinder engine with a bent shaft is not likely to start at all.
Be prepared to replace the blade but first pull the flywheel off the top of the engine. After the nut is off, check the square key like Bozo said. The key fits in a slot cut into the end of the shaft and into the flywheel. It serves two purposes; first off, it controls the timing and secondly it acts as a shock absorber.
A new key only costs about 25 cents. You NEED to do this regardless and it's cheap.
Replace the key and flywheel and try to start the engine. If it still vibrates, check the balance of the blade and straighten if necessary. If a new blade is available; install it.
If the vibration persists, buy a new engine or a new mower because the blade and key are the only things worth replacing.
With the way Lawnmowers go, it might be cheap enough to get another one .Thats if your shaft is bent. If its just your blade just replace it...And get rid of that bloody pipe or cover it or whippersnip around it (Australian talk)or something. your Mrs should be doing the lawns anyway!...cheers!
