In Ontario or Canada what are the requirements for clearance from a furnace flue.?
Question:I am installing some shelving in my basement but know there is a minimum specified distance potentially flammable items (cardboard boxes, etc, not flammable liquids) can be placed safely near the furnace flue. What is it ?
Answers:
According to the International Residential Code (IRC), which is observed by many communities in Canada, the minimum clearance depends on the vent material and construction, as well as the type of furnace. Table G2427.7.7 lists the minimum distance from combustible material for different types of appliances.
Double-walled Type B gas vents range from "As listed" (usually 1") to 6 inches. Type L gas vents, which are also double-walled but with a stainless steel inner core that can operate at a much higher temperature, ranges from "As listed" (usually 3") to 9 inches. Single wall metal pipe ranges from 6 inches to 36 inches. Elsewhere in the code, a masonry chimney requires a 2" minimum clearance to combustibles.
Since it is unlikely that you've got single wall metal, a clearance of 9" is probably more than adequate.
If you stay at least 3 ' away you don`t have to worry. Most times it`s18". Must be an old furnace then. Time to think of a high efficiency unit
