240 volt connection?

Question:my drier stopped working and i was testing the wires with a multitester and the red wire seems to be dead there is a black, white and a copper wire inadition to the red. what can i do now??

Answers:
You should measure 120 v black to white; 120 v red - white.

If either do not measure this, go to your fuse box or circuit breaker box. One of the lines has blown a fuse or tripped the breaker.

Sorry, you need to have it replaced or find out where the problem is.
You didn't say if you checked voltage at the receptacle itself or on the wires. Assuming it was the wires, I would be suspect of the breaker or an open in the wiring. If you didn't check the wires themselves, then check the wires.

You might also check between the black and the ground and the red and the ground. It should be approximately 120 volts.

Now, having said all of that, if you have no experience working with electricity then realize that you can kill or seriously hurt yourself.
You need to check the two hot wires coming out of the breaker. Right now, you don't really know which wires are the two hots, or which wire is supposed to be the neutral. The bare copper is the circuit ground.

You can't really trust the wire colors. You have to trace it out back to the breaker.

The breaker may be bad. Or the bus in the panel could be corroded where it contacts the breaker.

If you didn't even know what the copper wire was, you don't really have any business working on this. You should get someone qualified to help you and teach you some basics. This is dangerous stuff.
check the voltage at the breaker one side might have tripped
black is hot as well as the red and the white is neutral across the black and red you should read 220 volts from black or red to neutral or ground you will read 120 volts on your tester but be very careful 220 can zap you in a heart beat
