What's the best way to cool down my apartment?
Question:I live on the second floor and it's bound to be stuffy when I get home. I only have a window in my bedroom and a sliding glass door in my living room. The sun beats down in the living room but not my bedroom. An A/C is not an option unfortunately.
Answers:
during the hot parts of the day put a box fan in your window pointed out and later when it gets cooler out turn it around facing in. This allows some of the hot air to be forced out during the day and cool air to get in quicker in the eve/ night. good luck
You can't go to Sears and get a window mounted A/C unit? Is your slumlord that much of an a-hole? Not that it would surprise me if he were.
Keep it dark as possible. You need thick dark curtains and a window shade. light = heat.
Also, several portable fans.
You did not say why A/C was not an option...but if it is because you cannot have a window unit they do have the portable ones now that do not hang out.
If you are comfortable with leaving your sliding door open with just the screen and get a window fan for your bedroom that would keep the air as fresh and cool as possible. Otherwise I am not sure what option you have.
Good Luck.
dark..but with thick white or beige curtains or drapes
Try getting an air conditioner.
Block the sun beating down in the living room by installing blinds, drapes, sheets if you have to, over the sliding glass door. I know you said that AC is not an option, but look into a window unit for your bedroom. They are not that expensive, and at least you will be able to get a good nights sleep.
Portable room coolers are functional. I am not their biggest fan but when there are no other options they will do. They ultimately blow cool air out the front and hot air out the rear or bottom so try to locate it where the warm air output is directed into a room not being used. Add to that an oscillating fan. A slight breeze as little as 3 mph across your skin can make you feel 10 degrees cooler. We form a stagnant layer of heated air around our bodies and keeping that moving adds to our comfort more than many realize. As others have already suggested keep the room as dark as possible helps and investing in a ceiling fan that you can take with you when you leave wont hurt. The key is to keep the air around you moving as much as possible.
Iced Cold Beer, my place is Ice cold air conditioning come over.
