Look on the door and see what side the hinges are on when it opens away from you.

Stand on the outside of the door or the side where the door opens away from you. Whichever side has the hinges is the hand of the door.
if theres no hinges on it, look at the edge where they latch is. With the door upright you will see the edge is beveled very slightly.. If your looking straight at the edge beveled to the left its a left hand door beveled to the right its a right hand door.
The bevel goes towards the door jam first.
by the hole for the door knob, the length is smaller from the hole to the floor on the side that it is meant to be used

One easy way is to stand with your back the the hinge side of the door.If the door opens to the right the door will open on that side ,the same goes for the opposite side
