Can someone please provide the easiest way to clean a swimming pool?

Question:I just purchased a house with an existing swimming pool, it looked pretty nice before we purchased. We've been remodeling it for the past month and haven't moved in yet but the water appears to have turned green and the pool looks dirty and old. Any ideas other than calling a swimming pool company? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Joe,

I'm going to assume this is your first pool. You will want to start off with knowledge and helpful advice... hmmm, just what I have to offer ;-)

Take a sample of the pool water down to your local pool store and have them analyze it for you, they will do this for free. Ask them to do the following full spectrum analysis: Total chlorine, Free chlorine, Combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, hardness, total dissolved solids, cyanuric acid, metals (manganese, copper, iron, etc), nitrite/nitrate, and phosphates.

Once you get the sample results and recommendations post them back here or feel free to email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com Also include the material the pool is made of (concrete/plaster or vinyl), gallon size of the pool, filtration system if you know the specs, chlorination system (hopefully it's a chlorine pool and not a Baquacil or Bromine pool. if you don't know the pool store will tell you this), and any chemicals the previous owner left for you.

With this information I can set you up on a full maintenance schedule to keep your water crystal clear and also take you step by step through the various chemicals, uses, and levels of maintenance. Plus help you clean up the green water you have now.

drain it clean it refill it treat it with chemicals go swimming
Where are you? I'm a pool tech. There are certain things you can do but the worst is to drain it and refill, which costs a lot. This may still cost some cash, though.
Go to your nearest pool store and they will get you started on what you need. To get the green out you will need to shock the pool. They can instruct you on all of the other chemicals. I take in a sample of the water and the store tests it and gets me in the right track for free. Good luck! * My pool was as green as a swamp, you will be amazed at what shock and chlorine can do. You will not have to drain it!
Yes, get a pool service, it's worth the money.
LOL! Just fill it up with water, guy! I a little green won't hurt you! I'm am just SO smart! You may want to vomit in it a little though, but make sure there are LOTS of lucky charms in there first. Then turn around and give your Gerald a big kiss.
Go to ANY pool supply store in your area (use the yellow pages under POOLS). go there and tell them your problem---they will give you the chemicals to SHOCK the pool and tell you about cleaning the filter AND the pool and when it will be safe to swim in it after shocking it... also they can give you tips on pool maintenance. If THAT doesn't work, go back to the yellow pages and look up POOL MAINTENANCE and call one of those guys to come out and do it FOR you---for a usually LARGE fee.
make sure the filter is clean. back flush if needed. run the filter longer and shock the heck out of it. then have the water analyzed. they do this for free at any pool place. they will tell you what you need to bring it back. DO NOT DRAIN IT that's just crazy and not needed. We have had a pool for 17 years. we don't even drain it down in the winter any more. they have a plastic skimmer cover which eliminates that step. invest in an auto matic chlorinator too. that really helps with maintenance
If you have not moved in.. hire a service. If you are north of the mason-Dixon line, it will be expensive, but you probably have enough going on that you do not want to spend 2 hours a week maintaining the pool right now.

Call up a service, get them to clean it up, then, after the work in the house is done, and you are moved in, go to the pool store, buy some books and find out how to maintain your own pool. You'll feel better and you can still have the service come in to do the tough stuff, like opening and closing the pool..

-luck
If the pool looked good before you moved in, it may only need chlorine and vacuuming.

Chemical shock, vacuum the pool if it has good pressure, then clean the filter.

Refilling actually is only about $25, depending on capacity, and local water costs. If calcium is too high, your pool supply company may suggest you drain or drain it down half way.

You can cut water loss and boost temperature some with a cover during summer. In very hot weather, I just cover about half the pool, otherwise it is too warm to swim in.
Hire some of the new amnesty workers! You only have to pay them 2-5 dollars an hour!
