I need help with my air conditioner!!?

Question:I live in a very hot area of southern CA. My thermostat is set at 73 unless I leave then it's 78. It seems my A/C runs constantly at night. I can't figure it out. The thermostat reads 71 and it still runs. I don't have this problem in the daytime when it's 115. Why does it do this at night? What can I do to fix it. My electric bill and I thank you.

Is it a central air system? It sounds like a problem with your thermostat. Is your thermostat a programmable one, or one with a dial/ lever to set the temp. If it is a lever/dial type try removing the cover and see if the cover is holding the mercury bulb so that it is making it run longer than it should. Sometimes the cover gets pushed on too far. If it is a digital type stat, try replacing the batteries, if that doesn't make any change, then replace it. A little more info and I could talk you through it.

Are you turning it up that high every day? If so, that's why its running so much at night. Its working so much to cool it back down. Turn it down only a couple of degrees or just leave it at 73.
do you close your bedroom doors? if so, the cold air thats running isn't getting to the thermostat so It keeps running. also, check your fans and see if you have it set up to run the fan at night.
You have a thermostat that is maintaining the 73 setting, that means it will turn on the heater to bring the temp up if it drops below that temp also. You need to turn it on AC and set the fan to auto. Good luck
apparently its warmer than 71 so its going to run..urn it up jsut alittle bit and see if the air kicks off,, and if thats not it youd bess call and ask a repairman..they will give ya info on it and how to possibly fix it
you do not have to set it you thermostat a certain temp. just set it to what is comfortable to you. put a thermomiter on top of your thermostat and make sure the readings are the same.
also, if your freon is low, it can freeze up at night when the tempatures drop down.
