Hot Water Help!!?
Question:My gran's hot water heater (electric 250lt) has died. We are debating on how best to replace it. The unit is located in the laundry - so a changeover unit is $1200-1500 due to the electronic aides to stop it flooding should something go wrong. The alternate option is to have a Gas instantaneous unit fited outside and hooked up to LPG gas bottles.
Please help with your experiences!!

If the unit is OK otherwise, get an electrician to see if you can replace the electric elements of it! It should be far less expensive.
You are getting REAMED by your plumbing contractor. A electric HWT should cost not even half of the 1200. A quick response tank cost 1200 at wholesale cost. Stay with the electric and get another bid!
