How much does it cost to remove asbestos?
Question:In california...can you remove it yourself? If removing tiles with asbestos glue that are frail, do we need to contact the local health authorities. Is it expensive to have them come out and do the job? How dangerous is it to do yourself and can you simply "cover" it with a new floor, such as hardwood or even re-cement the floor...
Answers:
In California...you are supposed to call an abatement contractor to remove the asbestos. If the asbestos gets airborne and into you lungs you may get cancer, see Steve McQueen. I know of some individuals who removed the asbestos from the ceiling and disposed of it at the landfill in garbage bags. they wore respirators and jumpsuits. If the landfill catches you, again big trouble. If your talking about the 12" asbestos floor tiles, you can cover them. the asbestos is the bottom part of the tile.
Do not try to remove it yourself!
Covering it in place is a safe option, as long as you don't disturb it in the process.
I don't know what local regulations are, but the dangers of asbestos are highly overblown (Steve McQueen spent years driving motorcycles in mines that produced asbestos). You can remove the tiles if you wish, using a mask and gloves is reasonable. You can also cover them with no problem. To be sure that the tiles are asbestos, look at the size. 12" tiles are never asbestos, most 9" are.
