My 2004 house has an upstairs floor that creaks a lot. Is this bad? Is it a big fix? Any insights...?

Question:House is 4 story split townhouse, creaking floors are carpeted, not hardwood. stairs leading to upstairs also creak.

Answers:
most likely the subflooring was nailed to the joists without glue. The only way I am aware to reduce the noise is to add a shim between the floor sheathing and joist. I guess you could screw the flooring down, but you'd have to remove the carpet. The stairs will be harder as the treads rest on three stringers and the noise may be from the stringer to upper floor interface.

.i would remove the rugs and look at where it is nailed down try using screws so you can catch the beams.the stairway stand and see where the noise is coming from and use shims on the steps you would have to remove the little molding, and then stick the shims and cut them also look at where it was nailed and screw the step down make sure you countersink the screw and use wood putty to cover the screw head, then try to match the stain.
dont know where you are,,but possibly builder still is liable for this problem
worth a look see

you hear a noise when something moves
floors are not designed to move
someone shorted you somewhere
like others said you can rip carpet and screw it
i would rather the builder do it,,,easier
