Central air conditioner does not work.?

Question:My central air condioner does not work. I have a heat pump style air conditioner/heater. The heater does not work either. The pump is about 10 years old. I've reset the circuit breakers and reset the fuse but still having problems. Any recommendations before I call an expert and when I do call an expert how much am I talking about for repair costs? I live in Virginia. Thanks!

Answers:
Could be the thermostat, which is a fairly inexpensive item, I would try that first, the thermostat goes out so does everything else.

UGH! heat pumps are a pain. It sounds like you have a bad electrical problem with it. The fact that you keep popping breakers means to me that the compressor or fan motor is pulling a lot of amps at start up or not staring up at all. If the compressor is locked up and popping breakers and fuses, it's done. In the case of a heat pump, you may want to just replace the thing. I would look into a higher SEER unit to cut your electric bill.
