Hello, my toilet has started making an awful vibrating/humming noise in the pipes whenever I flush?
Question:Happens when I flush, the whole of the upstairs seems to vibrate. Turning on a cold tap seems to alleviate the problem. Thanks
Answers:
It's known as "Water Hammer".
The first answer was right, about turning the stopcock slightly.
It is usually caused by the water pressure try turn the stop c**k a quarter turn. Also it could be worth checking the valve in the cistern. the missing letters are oc. It is the correct spelling and in no way is it "sexual"
Oh No!! looks like you have gremlins in you pipes. don't go to the toilet keep your legs crossed if necessary it may take some time but i think they will work there way out .hope this helps.Sorry about that, It has nothing to do with pressure!. Thanks Robert M,And its not stop c--k its stop valve the stop c--k is only slang. No the problem seems like some how you have got air in the system.try running cold tap for some time, you are looking for the water to spit and spurt out of tap, that will be the air coming out.again sorry about the joke.
check the tank(behind toilet) to see if it is full. Also check the "flapper" it is a rubber gasket attached to a chain that is controlled by the flushing mechanism it should have a good seal on the bottom of the tank they get warped sometimes and do need to be replaced from time to time( very inexpensive and easy to do find it at local hardware or dept store about $7) if all that checks out check the water main feed under the tank usually has a oval or diamond shaped knob( this regulates the intake to fill the tank) open it up a bit and flush if this does not rectify the problem there may be a problem in the lines. You will have to call a plumber, Water municipalities only deal with problems on the opposite side of the meter, If the Plumber checks out that it is not on your side contact your local water service
You've got an airlock in your cold water system, try running all cold taps simultaneously, it may well flush out the trapped air. If not, consult a plumber.
Here's the deal. It is called Water hammering. To fix it Hardware store. Get a water hammer Arrester. There are 2 types. 1. is copper and you have to sweat this on to a cold water pipe. 2. Screw on at the cold water tap of your washing machine before the hose and your hose is connected to that. All an arrester is a small bladder if you will. It is about 6" and allows air some where to go. No more hammering. Cheap fix. Good Luck
Before you go to any extremes of cutting your walls open to brace your pipes or trying to repair a water hammer, open the tank of the toilet. There's what we call a fill valve and what you might call a ballcock. Its the valve that allows the water to enter the tank when its flushed and it should have a float on it that shuts off the fill valve when the tank is full. . I bet the vibrating stops when the fill valve shuts off. Go to a hardware store and get a GOOD fill valve/ballcock. They a fairly cheap but dont get the cheapest one. Spend about 15 bucks and get a good one. I'll almost guarantee that's the problem!! (although there is no money back guarantee for this answer) If you need to know how to install in then shoot me an email but read the directions of the new one and it should tell you how! I should really charge for this advice!!
