Can anyone help me with my broken oven?
Question:I was given a really nice GE Spectra gas oven and it had worked great at my friends home but after we installed it everything worked except the oven. Even the broiler works but not the actual cook temperature. It I set the temperature the light says the oven is on but nothing happens in the oven. The igniter does not heat and no gas comes out. This is one of those kind with the lights for preheat and a screen. And the preheat light never comes on. Anyone out there have a clue about these things. It is a $600 range and I hate to throw it away, but I am wondering if it got dammaged in the move. I can not see paying someone 200$ to repair it when I can buy a new simple stove for a little more than that.

It is the temperature control module or sending unit that needs to be replaced. Do not under any circumstances think that this is a minor deal. These modules are calibrated for a precise amount of flow to the burner. Call a pro, or if you live in Ca. call So. Cal. Gas. The Gas Co. will send a technician and he can troublshoot the problem for nothing. Don't think you can fix it yourself, unless you have a serious desire to kill or injure everyone in your house and the surrounding nieghbors the next time you make bread pudding.
Go to GE's website and ask them. You don't want to throw away a $600 range (given to you) and you don't want to spend $200 to fix it does not make sense. It is either worth repairing or it isn't.
the best advise that i ,or any one can give is to call a qualified service tech. gas will blow if its done wrong or has a leak.

It might just be the ignitor. Call a professional to check it for you. They are not as expensive as one would think and they can usually do the repair in less than one hour.
I can't see that you are able to buy a new stove for around $200.00. Maybe three times that though.
I have worked on appliances for my father for 15 years.Sounds like you have glow bar type of igniter which has probably gone bad.GE's are a real pain to work on and the parts aren't cheap. If you go with another stove I would look for whirlpool or a brand called roper which is about same as kenmore and whirlpool but less chrome so to say and less cost.Very easy to work on and less expensive. This is what I have in my home.I also live in GA and really $40 is cheapest you will find for a service call. That does not leave much profit with price of gasoline.Hope you find this info helpful.
