Answers:
Your flapper valve is leaking.
doo do doo do doo dooooo.... (X files music)...
when you flushed last the handle stuck and kept running.
I'm not a plumber but I've had this problem before... it's the handle that more than likely the problem. With our toilet the ball that floats in the tank was loose and constantly filling with water and was lucky it didn't over flow and that was because the handle was also faulty allowing water to flow into the bowl
I'm not a plumber, but when I was a kid, my toilet did this. My parents didn't believe me, but later it was discussed on the radio when a plumber was the guest. I think the solution was to replace the seal on the tank. When I worked at the water department, we advised folks to put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and (without flushing) come back later and see if there was color in the toilet. Bet that's happening. The remedy is to replace the seal that keeps the water in the tank.
This is called a Phantom Flush. The usual reason is a leaking flapper. The water slowly leaks out of the tank into the bowl. When the water level gets to a certain point, the fill valve is called upon to refill the tank. Pour a couple cups of coffee (liquid only, no grounds) into the tank and watch the bowl. If the water becomes discolored, the flapper is leaking. You can turn off the water supply valve for the toilet and wipe down the flapper and seating area for it to remove any mineral deposits that may have formed and are holding the flapper up a bit. May need to replace the flapper.
No need to call the plumbers! Whew! No need to call the police, either. It was me. silly me, but there I was wandering around your neighbourhood, the chilli con carne from last night gone through me... anyway, long story short, you left your front door wide open, and I thought, "geez, I'll go close that door, and while I'm at it, doing something nice for this bloke, I'll assume he'd let me use the toilet". Wasn't it nice of me to flush?
over flow was going, dodgy toilet valve
If you're in the UK then it is probable the ball valve was stuck. If you're in the USA then it probably is a leaking flapper valve.
Sounds like you need to replace or repair the ball valve. Check the level of the overflow device as well.
