Should I get a room air conditioner?

Question:I went to best buy and the energy star tag says only 38 dollars a year to operate. Thats nothing compared to what I pay for the Central AC. I have a small apartment and I am always in my bedroom anyways. What do you think and why

Answers:
As others say you only have to cool or keep cooler one room instead of the whole house. The newer window units are quite cheaper these days than years past. Plus they are substantially quiet. And as mentioned they are disposable instead of repairable, just dispose of them properly.

I've toyed with the idea of a room plug-in heater during winter when the wife and I go to bed instead of heating the whole house.

I prefer fans- but a room air conditioner is great for making you more comfortable. Keep the filter clean and if it has a digital thermostat? Greater.
yes you should,

that way, you can keep your room nice and cold for a fraction of the cost, and the rest of your apartment will just be a little warmer. Besides, this way you save the environment too, since your central unit will be using less power.
The ideal conditioning system for a dwelling would be one that senses your presence in a room, turns itself on and, when you leave the room, turns itself off. This type of system, which will be introduced sometime, in the near future, will be the ultimate in what is called the zoning approach.

Your idea makes good sense, and is just a simpler approach to the same zoning system - only you have to manually control yours.

You'll save money by not running your A/C to cool the entire house. If you need to go to other areas occasionally, you might want to get a portable fan to help you out.

Actually, if the noise from window shakers doesn't bother you, puting window A/Cs in other areas of the apartment might be the way to go. Small window A/Cs are very cheap these days. So cheap that most should be replaced, rather than repaired, when they breakdown. Central A/Cs, however, are very expensive to replace, so you are reducing wear on yours which will make it last longer. Good thinking.
