Add on a watersoftner unit. Have a tech come in they do this for free analyze the water. With the right softner clothes will not only smell better but will be cleaner. The hot water heater, pipes, valves etc... will last for years for pennies a day. This is the fix. Just shop smart for the unit it is a buyers market out there. Good Luck and good shopping.
SHE MUST HAVE A FRONT LOADER! i have one,my daughter has one,and several other people we know have one. all of our clothes stink! everybody asks if it's a musty smell, and i never could find the right word for it."sewer"is perfect! i have tried many things to get rid of the smell, but on somethings it just doesn't work.i have a maytag neptune that i dispise!!! i thought top of the line would be so great, but when i buy the next washer,it will be a regular cheapy!
What I do with most of my washing even though I don't suffer from the same problem as you, and that is to pour some nice smelling disinfectant into the rinsing water. This will probably not only get rid of your swere smell, but help kill any bacteria on the clothes or in the water and they come out smelling so much nicer.
Some washers do not pump out all of the water. Check the washer to make sure that there isn't any standing water anywhere in the path that the water takes through the washer. If it is a front load, check in the front near the door. Another option is to clean out the entire inside of the washer with a product like Washer Magic. If you can't find it locally, you can get it at:

Try putting the drain hose into a 30 or 40 gal trash can. The water can be used to water trees. If the clothes do not smell, one could assume there is something wrong with the venting and the septic is backing up.
If they still smell, where is the water line for her washer? Possibly too close to the septic tanks or leach field? Is it city water or well water? Does she have a holding tank (possible bacteria)? Does the water in the washer smell or the rest of the house? How old are the water lines?
