Moved into a house and I hear chewing in the wall by my window.?
Question:Could it be termites? Ants? A mouse? A critter outside that I think is in the wall? Might it be in the old desk I got off the side of the road that I keep near the window? What's my next course of action--call the landlord, or go straight to an exterminator? How do I tell?

Tell the landlord to send an exterminator.
First, call the landlord. If he refuses to check it out, call the department of housing in your county. (I had to do this when we had a sewage problem in my basement my landlord refused to handle, and when we kept getting sick from mold). The DOH will make them pay if they find something.
Probably a mouse or a rat but it also could be squirrels. You won't hear insects eating. You could try a mouse trap or even poison bait if you don't have children or pets.
Its more than likely a squirrel or other small critter. Start with the landlord, he should arrange for an exterminator to come out.

Sounds like carpenter ants to me. Call the landlord and have him check it out. It's his property.
