I also have a big racoon problem. You really need to purchase a wire cage/trap. The door slams shut on them. They aren't hurt, until you shoot them through the cage or you can take them else where and release them if you are so inclined. It's called a "Have-a-hart" trap, but it doesn't kill them. That part is up to you if you want to do it. It was about 40 bucks at a hardware store. I've been using it for years.

ask your local wildlife and fishery or animal control. You can use one of theirs
don't use a trap, try to do this:

Raccoons are clean animals, in fact they often wash their food before eating. Because of this habit of cleanliness, they do not foul their nests. Ammonia, a chemical found in urine, is an offensive odor for raccoons. Soak rags in ammonia and place them as near to their nest as safely possible. You may also want to place soaked rags near all possible entrances. If you have difficulty reaching the nest, you might be able to apply ammonia in the vicinity with a squirt bottle. Periodically retreat the area with ammonia.

Keeping the Raccoons Out After They Have Gone
Once the raccoons are out, you must seal their access to your home. If you aren't certain if they are out, seal all but one exit. Once you think they are out, seal the last exit. You don't want to trap them in your home, the will die of thirst, decay and emit a foul odor for days or even weeks. Furthermore, the mother may leave the nest, to return later, but the litter of baby raccoons remains behind. Sealing out the mother is both inhumane, and will result in a foul odor if the babies die in your home.
Go to the Homedepot and get the animal repellant pellets and sprinkle. You can also sprinkle black pepper. I am not sure if the traps are allowed because of animal cruelty. You may want to contact an animal control center or exterminator type company to take care of the trap is this is your option.
attach a string to a stick. set the stick under a box. when it goes for the bait pull the stick out from under the box. i use this trick with squirels all the time
1. Stop leaving food around.
2. Secure your trash cans
3. Clean your yard
4. Stop feeding them and they will go away in less than a week
5. If you have a dog or cat, give it a good brushing and sprinkle the fur from the brush around your yard.
You can rent regular traps at many hardware stores or from your city. Raccoons are fairly vicious and have sharp canines, you need a really well made trap.

If they are bedding on your property you can rid yourself of them cheaply. They hate moth balls and a handful of them tossed whereever they are living will encourage them to move.

Also, you should know that their dried feces is pretty dangereous. You need to wear an air mask when you are cleaning up after them.
Buy a big dog, or a gun, or some fire works.

If you want them alive, then just make sure you garbage is completely sealed and you dont have food they can get to. Pretty soon they will ditch your joint!
Leave outdoor lights on and stop leaving food around.
I had a 5 raccoon family invade my garage to break into the trash cans I use to store my pet food - they made a mess and didn't seem to be bothered by a 50 lb dog. Had to eventually put a door guard in at night to keep them from using the dog door. They would get completely into the neighbors house to feed in the kitchen. They are tricky, big and vicious so a store bought trap is the best - unless you were thinking of poison - then just go to the local feed store for advice and your other needs and set the bait.
I once had a raccoon in the attic. I found the ideal solution right in the house. I removed the battery-operated smoke detector from the ceiling, taped the test button down, and placed it in the attic.

The animal couldn't stand the continuous screech of the detector, and was gone within minutes.
go to ebay and buy a 220 conibear trap. Throw some fish in the back of kitty litter bucket. Set the trap and place it in front of the bucket. Place this in the area of concern.
