Question:about 5 - 3ft shingles blew off my roof in a bad storm. There is a break in the storm right now. Is this something I can repair myself or should i make an insurance claim? Also will having those shingles off cause damage if more of the storm passes over?
Answers:
1- The damage can be repaired.
2- You can make an insurance claim.
3- I wouldn't try it myself because it's not easy.
Here are some items of consideration:
If you have 2 or 3 layers of shingles on now you need a roof replacement.
Remove all layers of shingles down to the bare sheeting (wood).
Replacement shingles should be to building code. For example, in central New Jersey where I was a homeowner for more than 30 years in a house built in the 1930's, we had to re-roof the whole house. Up to 100 miles of the Atlantic coast, the shingles had to have a rating the would stand up to 100 mile-an-hour winds. ( contractor had half the roof done with 80mph shingles and had to redo (called the building inspector
after I read the label in the bundles of shingles).
Check everything and let a "Good" professional do the job.
Good Luck ! ! !
You need to cover the area asap to avoid water damage.
Shingles are very easy to reattach as long as the wind did not ruin the integrity of the shingle. If not you need to start with the lowest damaged shingle and tuck under the above shingle apply a few roofing nails toward the top of the shingle and work your way up. Not very difficult if the roof height and pitch are reasonable. If not have a local roofer do the job. This job is very cheap so do not claim under your insurance or your rates will go up.
tarp it as soon as you can call your insurance company to make a claim then they will come out an assess the damage cut you a check and you get a new roof!!! were in florida hurricane heaven of the blue tarped roofs.
You can do the repair without a lot of special tools yourself, check with a home depot. they might have a weekend class. You definitely want to cover the area to prevent any damage to the interior and making more work for you. If you don't feel you can handle the job get a quote from a licensed contractor, you'll need one if decide to file an insurance claim anyway.
if it is fairly extensive, call your insurance co. you paid for it, use it.
