What does the ceiling fan in the bathroom do with the air it sucks up?

Question:I live on the first floor in a 2 story apartment building.
In my toilet, in the ceiling, there is a fan. It has a button that turns it on and off. I'd say that 80% of all bathrooms/toilets in the world have these fans. My question is... where do they lead?? Does the air go up a chimney and out through the roof, or what?

Thanks!

Answers:
You probably don't have a window in your bathroom. Its an exhaust fan to pull out the moisture in the bathroom usually from taking a warm/hot shower or bath. The air travels through the ducts & goes outside.

it exits through a long pipe to the roof
Hopefully the air is run through a small duct to the outside. They use a 4" plastic duct like a dryer does. The duct would run to a small grate in the outside wall or up to the eaves of the roof.
Some push the air out a small 3" flexible tube similar to the tube on your dyer. However, some just circulate the air within the room and don't vent anywhere.
If installed properly it is supposed to go thru a pipe to the outside of the bldg. But if its not done right then it is just there and it goes into the attic or in your case, between the 2 floors. If it's not properly vented it will cause mold. Been there, done that. Not good.
the bathroom exhaust should lead to duct exiting the residence. the air is very humid so it must be vented directly outside, because it would quickly rot any wood it contacts in an attic.
Your joking, right?
It's supposed to go outside, but all too often it is just vented to the attic.
