My electric fence is causing big headaches, please help...?

Question:I've rebuilt my fence after a flood. Everything seems right. But when I turn it on, it runs perfectly for 20 mins, and then slowly starts giving warnings that there's a problem. The warnings come gradually, until after about 40mins it's really freaking out, and is in a constant warning state..I've been using the fence for about 4 years, and always been able to find and fix the problems..My last thought is that its an earthing problem, perhaps not enough earth poles. Anyone any ideas? Please..

Answers:
Some electric fences have DC voltage on the wire. If yours is DC, and the negative side is the ground connection, it is likely that you have some moisture and a minor ground or grounds. If it is possible to reverse the power, so positive is grounded, the problem should go away.

The reason is that a copper corrosion barrier acts like a diode. When the wire is positive passes current readily. This can erode the copper. When the wire is negative, the barrier blocks, or reduces, current. Any corrosion is to the material in the offending ground.

This is why telephone company circuits use positive ground.

I suspect a short. We had a year that produced a ton of rain and ours started to short out and did the same thing. We had it for longer than you did and the short was on a little section.
