On the thermostat in my home, If I switch the Fan from auto to ON, What Happens?

Question:Does it overide the AC/HEAT?, I have received a few different answers. E.G.
AC doesn't have to work as hard.
AC stays on all the time.
The fan switch will override the AC, and only the blower is running.

Answers:
If your thermostat is properly installed, switching the fan to on will do just that and nothing else. It allows the fan to circulate air and does not require the A/C unit to operate. Switching the fan to auto will cause the fan to come on when the thermostat calls for heating or cooling.

The fan runs continuously, but the heat/AC works only when the temp calls for it. It doesn't bypass it
Auto will be thermostatically or time controlled, ON over-rides that and give you instant ON and OFF control.
It will only turn on the blower and continue to circulate the air in the house. The A/C will come on as needed, but the blower will keep running while ON. Be careful, if you do this for an extended period of time, you will use a lot of electricity!
Switching the fan from auto to on sets the fan running constantly. In auto it comes on to cool to the temperature you set then turns itself back off again.
The fan will run constatntly and the thermostat will turn the cooling (or heat) on when the teperature calls for it. The fane will run constantly until you turn it to auto. In auto, the fan only comes on when the stat calls for cooling or heating. This is a good idea to do when the weather is not hot enough for AC and not cool enough for heat. That way air is circulated and its more effective than a ceiling fan.
On would just turn the fan on. You should have a secondary switch that would set "Heat, Cool, or Off". If that is set to off then only the fan would be blowing.
okay, i saw the other answers. pretty much on th e ball, all of the answers. i would say, if you just wanted to run fan switch in on position for the sole purpose of circular air, i mean, now that you know what happens, check amp draw on unit against window fans. because it will run constantly, you will need to consider what the person said about utilites and the energy bill. i also install for a living, (hvac).dandantheheatman-atticr... hope this is useful. ( one other thing is if you do not turn off the other switch from cool to off it will keep calling for the desired setting in automatic mode, the fan will just not turn off
This position is to provide continuous air flow. It is particularly helpful to make you feel cooler in the summer by creating a slight breeze and in the winter it is useful for pulling the stratified warm air down from high ceilings and can actually reduce your heating costs. The downside of this is that when the burner is off in the furnace the unheated air flow can feel like a draft on people if you don't use vent deflectors to shoot the air up the wall instead of on a person.

Using the feature will not override or affect using the heat or A/C.
I have been doing heating and air conditioning for over 12 years. I live in MN where we get all kinds of weather. I leave my fan in the on position all of the time. I have a 2 story home and keeping the fan on maintains constant temperatures between the levels and rooms. It doesn't use that much more electricity. It draws a lot of power to start up a blower motor It's kind of like this, If you get in your car, start it up and forgot something and have to run back in your house. You are better off leaving your car running rather than shutting it of. Stopping and restarting it will use more gas. Same goes for computers and blower motors. Auto-fan as needed. on-fan always on. It will not over ride your heating or cooling either way.
on Auto the fan only comes on when the outside unit kick on to cool the house. If the fan is in the "on" position it forces the fan to run all of the time whether the outside unit is on or not.
