Over a period of time the front glass protector shield gets worn out and allows more microwave to exit towards the outside of the glass making it hazardous to the person standing in front of it.
All microwaves should be checked every month with a device to rate the waves coming out so that it doesn't exceed a certain amount tolerable to humans. Any amount exceedingly high will cause Cancer and other ailments.
The Federal Government uses a certain wave measuring tool to check and make sure that wavelengths are not escaping through the glass outside of the inner table of the microwave.
Personally myself I buy a new microwave every year to avoid any confrontations with wavelengths escaping at large amounts.
