I have a fogged window in Florida. Is it possible to just cut the inner pane out and clean the fog.?
Question:Insulation is not an issue where i live. So i can survive with a single pane.
Answers:
I too live in Florida. What you have is a double glazed window, meaning 2 panes with a vacuum between them. What has happened is that the seal is broken, allowing air, condensation, etc. to get between the 2 panes. Rather than attempting to remove the interior pane (which would be risky, to say the least), remove the entire sash and take it to a window fabrication shop where they can safely replace the glass. If you are unable to remove the sash, you may have to arrange for a "house call" to have this done. Any good Home Improvements store (Lowes, Home Depot) should be able to give you the name of a reliable establishment or individual who could do this for you, or check your phone book "yellow pages" - look under "glass"
If the glass is not tempered you can cut the inner pane. The reason for the fog is the seal between panes has failed. Higher end window companies offer warranties which may offer replacement, in lieu of destroying the window. you might consider replacement of the window.
the problem with the window is the seal between the panes. The problem with cutting the inner pane out, the outer pane will have less supports and could fall out. you could maybe drill a small hole in the inner pane for a vent of sorts. That could possibly eleviate the fog.
Jim has a great answer... and for the record insulation is an issue in that the gas that is supposed to be in the window pane help keep your house cooler and keep your ac cost's down so even thoe it seems like you dont need it... it will keep your wallet much happier if you do
