Do you know anything about a heat-pump where the whole unit stays outside the home?

It must be what we in the HVAC field call a package unit. It is ducted into the home with ductwork. What do you want to know about one? There is a lot to tell. It will save you money on your utilities in the winter, compared to a gas furnace if that is what you are wanting to know.

yeah. the duct work is run into the house. this is less efficient due to heat transfer of conditioned air on the way back into the house. It also looks crappy b/c you have holes on your house for duct work. also, animals (squirrels, mice etc) sometimes crawl into the duct work in the winter time to stay warm. My husband has found plenty of dead animals in them. yuck.
what do you want to know about one..have been fixing heat and cooling units for years ...self contained units are fairly common and not very hard to install or repair...
heat pumps only work within certain temps. after that the elecric strip heaters come on, do more research.
