Help! Kitchen sink hole cut too big.?
Question:I put in new laminate countertop and cut the sink hole square instead of rounding the edges, I know, I know, I was having a bad day. Now I have little cuts at each corner of my sink. It looks like heck. Do they make a flange, extension, gasket or anything that will go around my sink? I literally need like 1/4 inch of countertop covered around the sink. It's a standard 22 x 33 stainless steel sink, top mount.
Answers:
Greg, my idea to fix your sink problem is to purchase a sheet of stainless. Make sure it's 3/8" to 1/2" wider and longer then your sink. Cut the proper hole in the sheet and lay that down over your countertop, then set your sink. The sheet stainless will cover the gaps from the square cut, and hopefully won't make the cover up look too out of place.
I'd go down to Home Depot or Lowes and tell those folks what the problem is. Maybe they can help you.
You may have to just replace the counter top again.
I dont think any fix you can put there will look right.
They make caulk in different colors, could you use that? If not, maybe you could get a piece of stainless steel to put completely around the sink. We just bought a house and the owners had put strips of stainless steel down both sides of the stove so that nothing would leak or fall between the stove and cabinet.
Afraid not, you will need to replace the worktop. Silicone seal will do a short term, keep water out kind of repair, but unless you are very adept with silicone this too will look awful.
Your not the first person to make this mistake. If your cabinet allows, first look into getting a longer or wider sink before replacing the counter top. good luck.
So from now on, remember the adage: "measure twice, cut once." I'd go with the contacting one of the home repair places for advice - or, bit the bullet and contact a professional repairman. There are probably a number of things you can do short term, but long term, you are going to have to replace the countertop - the bad thing is laminate is not that forgiving, the good news is it's cheaper to replace than granite or tile.
Good luck!
