How would you find out a ground fault in a buried wire. I need to know where to dig ?

Question:

Answers:
If you mean locating the fault so you can dig in the right spot , for the most part , you are out of luck.
You can ring out the conductors (power off) to check continuity & see if there is a short between phase, neutral & ground.
The fault could be anywhere.
If it is burial cable , easier ot lay in another one.
If it is in conduit it would not be uncommon for the insulation to have failed & give you a short to conduit wall.
In that case use the old cable to pull in a new one & use burial cable as it is more resistant to corrosion.
Either way trying to find the fault & attempting a splice is just asking for trouble.

Hmmm. Maybe you need to use a reflectometer? I know it works on coax.
