How can I tell if I have a burst pipe?

Question:The shop below me has had water leaking through their ceiling but I dont know if it is me or my neighbouring flat. I dont want to pay for someone to look for it if its not me but I have no idea! Please help!

Answers:
If you wake up at night swimming - it's a fair assumption you have a leak, otherwise get on your hands and knees and have a look for something like a wet carpet, or mould starting to form, or fish swimming about on your floor, get someone in the other flat to do the same. Or wait until late at night and put the tip of a screwdriver onto a pipe and place your ear on the handle, if you hear water running... there is a leak close at hand or a sealife prog running on the TV. Call in a man with a water hound, these animals are like blood hounds but are a little perverted. Get the man from the shop downstairs to help, he will enjoy talking to you and a cup of coffee at a time like this can help preserve your friendship. Happy exploring, who knows, you may even find that lost ear ring....
The advice regarding turning off your supply only works if the leak is after the stop tap - worse than my advice... but I made you smile... Have fun.......

I was sitting down and watching debbie does dallas and my pipes burst too
turn your water off.If it stops its you
Two answers,

1. Turn off the water to your apartment.
2. Check to see if your water meter is running.

If yes then you have problems
1) Call the landlord or property owner...they must fix it not you
2) Turn off the main water supply to your flat. There should be a valve to do so. Wait a couple hours, if it still leaks, try the neighbors, then you'll know.
first go around your flat checking your pipes . if you find water in one place and a lot of it you have a leak. next turn off your water and get someone out to fix it . good luck
You get wet would be the normal thing. But as your leaking into somewhere else, check your visible pipes, if still no luck try calling a plumber in.
HELLO ,
I'm a plumber
(DO NOT PLACE PAPER TOWELS CLOSE TO ANY THING THAT WILL CATCH FIRE
ok now proceed.
for small leaks thats hard to detect place paper towels under the sink and around the shower, well everywhere you have pipes
start by judging the general area the person below you says the leak is coming from
Check how bad the leak is if its poring then its easy to find
check all the floors first. around the area
then check floors around the apartment
which you probably have, so next step
do you have an airconditioner check around the air conditioner
most leaks are in the bathrooms
check both sinks underneath feel around feel the water pipes drain pipes and check it while you are running the water ,
this may sound dumb but drains /faucets will somtimes only leak when you run the water
fill up the sinks (its important) then drain while inspecting for leaks,
check your wash machine while its in spin cycle because it may have a drain partial clog
check around your shower for the tiny tiny holes fill them with polly seam seal and wipe with wet sponge
try to move the bottom of your toilet if your toilet rocks back and forth it will be from there
after you have inspected very very good
then call a plumber because it may be in a wall.
dont forget to check hot water tank see if any water is anywhere
if its a condo and its in the wall
here is a little secret who ever calls the plumber
the plumber helps..
