We have unit air-conditioners, the outside metal casing is rusted fairly bad on one of them.?
Question:is this a serious matter? We use to put covers over them in the fall, but it was difficult, as it was a balancing act on a slooping roof. any suggestions? the AC in question seems to work well still, even with it's outside appearance.
Answers:
Rustoleum is a good idea but you will have to take the shell off anyway to paint it. If you paint it in place, the paint may coat the fins and result in bad heat transfer. If it really bothers you, go ahead and take it apart to paint it, if not, tell the neighbors to buy you a new unit or go pound sand.
Get some Rustoleum spray paint and coat it before it rusts through.
You can get some Rustoleum spray paint at Home Depot and paint over the casing. It will re-seal it and you will avoid further damage. As long as the unit still works ok, it should be fine. The casing is just there to protect what's on the inside.
Maybe replace the rusted metal casing. And use a ladder instead of the roof to access them.
If the neighbors are bothered by it's appearance, just tell them, "Oh, that's not rust. It's just poop. I'll wash it off later."
Well it could be if they get wet inside they will rush inside. But you should always cover them with something that lets air in but not water. if you cover it and it somehow gets wet it will hold the moisture and make it rush even faster. Good luck
