You can use any liquid cleaner that contains Hydrochloric acid. Most toilet bowl cleaners will have some of this in them, HOWEVER, It is acid, keep that in mind when working with it. the best one that i have found is called The Works toilet bowl cleaner. I have never gotten CLR to work. but i know alot of people who swear by it.
My Dad lived in the country with well water that was great except had a lot of iron rust in it. The inside of the dishwasher was a plastic finish that would get covered with this color changing material. Also, they had green tiles in the bathroom and shower. He would make a thick paste from ZUD cleanser and paint it on the inside of the dishwasher with a paint brush-the bigger the quicker. He would let it set for a couple of hours and dry. Then he would simply run the dishwasher. Clean as a whistle. Also the same with the shower. Paint on, let dry, shower offl It works.
Try to find Oxalic Acid at the drug store. This acid complexes with iron, and allows it to go into solution in water. Where I live, we routinely get rust stains from our water supply. A small amount of oxalic acid removes the iron stain every time.

Also be sure to follow safety directions. It's not a strong acid like a car battery, but you definitely don't want to ingest it.
Try those sponges from Mr. Clean. I have used them to remove rust stains from cans left on the side of the tub and it worked like a charm. No fumes, either. Good luck.
