Can I install compact fluorescent bulbs in my garage door opener?

Question:Your garden variety garage door opener has two incandescent bulbs in it. Normally I would not give substituting an incandescent bulb with a CF a second thought. However, to signal a problem such as an obstruction in the path of the door, it will cause the lights to flash several times, which I'm concerned may damage the bulb or the garage door opener.

Answers:
That might possibly damage the bulbs. Flourescent bulbs aren't made for being quickly turned off and on, but I don't think it'd hurt them too much. They do have to be turned off and on a bunch when you flip the switch. Where you really should be careful of using flourescents is if you have dimmer lighting. Most aren't made to work with dimmers.

Also, if you have trouble with your garage remote working you may want to switch back to incandescants. Fluorescants are known to mess interfere with television signals and other kind of electronic signals.

Also fluorescent bulbs dont' work the best in cold weather. If your garage is heated or well insulated and doesn't get very cold then they probably will be ok. However if your garage gets very cold you might find that it takes them a while to turn on.

might damage them... but try it!
Won't work. The compact florescents need time to "warm up". Flashing off and on will not work.
