How do I remove stubborn odor from ice cubes?
Question:Doesn't matter how you clean the fridge/freezer, the odor in the ice cubes still exist. I have tried baking soda and arm and hammer. any idea?
Answers:
Could be your water supply line to fridge. First try to eliminate odor - Best idea - Charcoal. I found the perfect product for this and know so many other people that use it. It is a natural fragrance free carbon product called FRIDGE IT odor absorbers. It is a little purple cube with an incredible activated carbon filter inside that is really, really, great and eliminates the odors and for a long time. It works so much better than baking soda all those sprays, and fragrances that just cover up smells and doesn't get rid of them. Just put one or two in fridge and freezer (same air circulated). Each only costs a couple of dollars. I use this product everywhere including car(smoke and pet smells), storage, closets, my fridge and also under sinks, near trash and have friends that use it on cat litter box and also diaper pails - it's that good. I really recommend it. You can buy it in kitchen gadget sections in stores like walmart and linens and things. I also think camping world sells it and Internet. Definitely worth trying
There may be biological contamination in your freezer that produces smells that taint.
Buy ice cube trays that have a cover to them. This will prevent the smell in your cubes as it never has contact with the air in your freezer. (You can do a trick to see if its the water, or the freezer before you do this. Buy those cheap tuppeware containers, fill them both with water from your tap. Cover one and leave the other uncovered. If the one covered does not have the smell then its NOT your water, its your freezer.)
Also, use only plastic ice cube trays, never metal.
I don't know ...but you could solve the problem by getting those little plastic ice cubes that have water inside them already and they keep your drink cold, don't dilute it and are re-usable.
It is the water. You have to use the cubes right away(once they are hard ) Leaving ice in the freezer gets freezer burn and smell after a week.
Let's hope you don't mean remove the odor from existing cubes.
Is it a plastic odor from the plastic trays or metallic from metallic trays- switch types.
Is it just a strange odor? May be your water. Use Brita Filtered water.
If none of the above and you have washed out the freezer AND the refrigerator with mild soap and warm water- try placing a small paper cup half full of fresh coffee grounds in the freezer. It will absorb whatever is in there. You can remove it if it flavors the cubes- but it shouldn't
You might want to invest in a filter system. My buddy uses that Britta pitcher, where you fill it up and it siphons through the filter. tastes pretty good. I think it cost him 30 dollars. there are many different types or you might want to get a new fridge with an ice maker, they come with filters installed.
How is the water before you freeze it?
If it is good then the smell could becoming from inside the refrig.
Try covering the cube trays before you freeze them.
Dose this help?
If it dose then I would say that the refrig needs a good cleaning.
I have found that most fridge/freezers that have an ice maker collect an odd taste/flavor on the surface after a day or two.
I thought all the suggestions so far are good.
I rinse the ice before using it in/with other items. Why the rinsing works, don't know - but it does in my case. Worth a try, at worst. it doesn't work for your situation
Take care
