Is it normal that my gas stove is hot even when turned off?
Question:My gas stove/oven has four little holes on top of it. It is always quite hot close to those holes, even when the stove and the oven are turned off (you can leave your finger a few seconds on the holes before you get hurt from the heat). I am concerned that my oven may not turn off properly and that I am wasting gas.
It is the first time I have a gas oven and am not used to its working principles. I noticed however that the stove does not have any particular ignition mechanism: when I turn on the stove, a flame appears immediately. Is it possible that the oven keeps internally a small flame to ignite the stove and the oven? Would that explain the heat? But then, what do I have to do if this flame shuts off by accident?
Answers:
If this is an older stove it may have pilot lights(flame). The newer models use electronic ignition and thus no standing pilots that waste gas! If it has pilot flames this heat is normal! ;-)=
The gas stove has a pilot that stays on all the time. If this goes out you will get a gas fume smell by the stove. But if you are not comfortable - please have the gas co. come in and check out your stove and the area where it is stationed.
It is called a Pilot light. You have them on older gas appliances. Yours may be set to high or wearing out, call a repair man to have a look see.
In older stove the pilot light is always on. However I believe the oven needs a match to light it up, generally found on the bottom of the oven., check before you start the oven and walk away, you may cause a dangerous situation of fumes to occur if you do not light it up properly. Either way call the gas company for an inspection. In my area, san antonio, texas this service is free.
its a pilot light ,if it goes out you will smell the gas
