What does it mean when your dehumidifier has ice build up on the back of it?
Question:
Answers:
A dehumidifier will often frost up if room temperatures are colder than about 65 degrees F. If your room temperature isn't this cold, airflow to the unit may be restricted or blocked entirely.
1) Be sure the unit is set far enough from the wall so that airflow isn't restricted.
2) Clean the evaporator coils. To do this, unplug the dehumidifier and take off the outer cover. Allow excess moisture to evaporate from the coils. Then, using a brush attachment on a vacuum cleaner, remove all dust buildup. If necessary, cover the motor and electrical parts with plastic sheeting and spray with water.

The air is too cold
two things can create ice. lack of airflow witch is caused by dirty filter or dirty coils or low on freon. yes they have freon in them they work like a refridgerator.
i'm guessing you left it running too long and it froze up. at this place i used to work, if we left the air conditioner or the dehumidifier on too long, they'd freeze and shut off till they thawed out. i'd recommend giving it some time off every day when you're not around. then fire it up when you're back.
Most likely you do not have enough air flow. Clogged or dirty air filter if it has one. The evaporator portion could have excessive dirt or gunk built up on it preventing proper airflow. Turn it off and let the ice melt then look at the area the fan blows the air across to see if it is blocked or diminished in any way.
