Can I replace just the middle pane of a bay window or do I have to replace the entire bay?

Question:I have a large bay window where the main middle pane has become completely glazed over. The rest of the bay window (smaller side windows) are in perfect shape and I'd like to replace just the large middle pane. Is this possible or do I have to replace the entire bay window? Anyone have a link with some DIY info? Thanks!

Answers:
You should just be able to replace the glass panes that are bad. Normally, the glass is held in with putty and a wood molding strip.

You can, but the process depends on how the window was made. Is the window made of insulated glass, or single pane? Insulated glass will have a dead space between the inner and outer glass. You should see a spacer around the perimeter, separating the two panes. It sounds like this is what you have. The seal has broken, allowing moist air to fog the glass from the inside.

The brand name is on the unit somewhere. A local dealer can order replacement glass. It will come with both panes, in a sealed "sandwich." If you can't find the brand, a window or glass company can order a sash. This is called a "deadlight."
It will include not just the glass, but a wooden or vinyl frame, with the glass sandwich mounted within.

When installing a deadlight, the critical measurement is the window frame size. because of variances in window construction, your new glass size might be different. that won't matter, as long as the overall unit fits into the opening in the bay. Obviously, its easier to just replace the glass, but it is not always possible to buy insulated glass in the same size as on an older window.
