Question on Generators to run a well pump?

Question:I have a well pump that needs 1,081 watts to run, I can get a generator that produces 1,000 watts, 1,200 watts max. Would that generator be big enought to handle the pump? To get the watts it is 115volts times 9.4 amps = 1,081 watts

Answers:
Your well pump will likely require much higher power to get started. Get a peak reading meter to determine its surge power requirements and size your generator accordingly.
For instance, my well pump operates at 240VAC. Running current is 6.2A, startup current 27.1A.

Read through my home generator page for more information.

If you are thinking of emergency power, think of everything you *might* want to power through the entire ordeal? Pump, television (very important), lights, the list goes on. Try this calculator. I think it's fairly accurate to measure your wattage needs.
