In opening my in ground pool, does the pool have to be filled before starting the pump?

Question:I'm filling the pool right now and it is about 1.5 feet below the skimmer. I tried to get the pump to pull from the bottom filter so I could start to add chemicals, but I can get it to pull in water. Does the water level have to be higher? The pump is also squealing a bit. Any advice?

Answers:
Water level must be above the skimmer line!
About 1/2 in between
Before starting pump make sure all lines are open in the pool( no "stopper").
Connect all hoses to your filter.
Prime Filter! you can do this by pouring water in the "leaf basket of the filter and starting the pump." Most are self priming

That squeal you hear could be that it is not primed or otherwise a bearing may be going in your motor.

I have given you a link to a site that tells you how to open and close your pool and maintenance guidelines for your equipment.

not if the water is above the pump suction line
you may have to prime the pump but by all means make sure the pool is full before you use the pump or you will burn it up
Turn the pump off until the pool is full . Sounds like you may have caused premature Damage to the pump .
