Water heater problems - making loud banging noise when flushing or turning on bathroom faucet.?

Question:Sometimes when the toilet is flushed the water heater in the basement will make a loud banging rumbling noise and also when the bathroom faucet is turned on it will occasionally do it. Does anyone know what is causing this?

Answers:
Its called water hammer. Go to Lowes or your local plumbing supply and purchase an expansion tank and either install it yourself or call a plumber to install it for you.

If your water heater is making any noise at all when you flush your toilet, you really do have a problem. Your toilet is not fed by the water heater, and should not affect the water heater in any way by flushing. Most likely the banging you hear is simply the pipes banging against a stud, (if they're not properly supported), or there may be air pockets in the lines that are causing noises. If you're at all handy, you can install a couple of air cushions in each of the lines and the noises should stop. You can purchase them at any home improvement store or a plumbing supply house.
ARE YOU SURE THE BANGING IS FROM THE HOT WATER TANK? BECAUSE THE TOILET HAS COLD WATER ONLY RUNNING TO IT. IT COULD BE WHATS CALLED THE WATER PRESSURE SWITCH, WHAT THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO DO IS CLICK ON AND RUN CONTINUOUS, WHEN THEY START TO GO BAD IT SWITCHES ON AND OFF THAT IS WHAT THE BANGING IS, WATER PRESSURE BEING TURNED ON THEN OFF AND ON MAKING THE PIPES MOVE AND BANG, I JUST CHANGED MINE 2 MONTHS AGO ITS VERY EASY AND CHEAP. LIKE $30 FOR THE SWITCH, AND 20 MINUTES TO CHANGE IT. ITS A LITTLE BOX THAT HAS 3 WIRES COMING INTO IT ON 2 SIDES, I BELIEVE THEY ARE RED,BLACK, AND GREEN. JUST A IDEA, MINE WOULD BANG LOUDLY TOO BUT IT WAS THE PIPES LIKE I SAID
Air in water line.
I saw this on "Ask This Old House". It was a simple fix and had nothing to do with the water heater. Go to their website and I'm sure that you will find your answer. askthisoldhouse.com .. I think that's the site.
