Help- I need a handyman but have limited budget-where do I look?

Question:I own a 35 year old house that has never been updated. I can handle minor repairs but am becoming overwhelmed with bigger things needing attention. Any state or local programs to assist homeowners with repairs so the neighborhood doesn't lose property values? Who do you call and ask?

Answers:
there are programs that help homeowners and towns keep up the housing stock. often at no or low interest, and some don't have to be paid back until the house is sold, or ownership is transferred. the downside of these programs is that they usually require that all mechanicals and structural things be fixed and upgraded to code. an elderly lady near my house got a new roof, siding, windows and doors, storm doors, electrical service and wiring upgrade, new furnace, and water heater. i think they may have replaced the toilet with a new water saver model, too, and i'm not sure what else they did on the inside. all of this work had to cost a pretty penny, and it is applied to the home in the form of a lien, that will be satisfied upon sale or transfer of the title. check with your local building or zoning officer to find out more about what is available, good luck, hope this helps.

??????????...
Check with your local church. There is usually someone that can do that kind of work and might be honest.
Depending upon your income/expense level you might try 'Habitat for Humanity' for any life safety or handicap accessible items. Any local church group may provide some assistance. Or you could look on craigslist.com, pick your city and shop for a local handy-man.
i don't know about where you are but in Australia there is a company call the grey army
it's basically retired tradesmen who do work for a hobby
they usually work for the less well off and charges are reasonable
you may have a similar group where you are
