Vinal is having too many problems today. It fades easily. When its cold it can chip or crack with no problem. When you go to replace a bad piece, the color is usually discontinued (unless its white). I would go with cement board. Its relatively new on the market, and my father has used it on the last 10 new homes he has built and most remodel jobs in the past 5 years. It is reletively cheap (cost was $2800 for a 3100 sq ft ranch home)

Make it look truly "ranch style". Use 4" cedar horizontal/bevelled instead.
I have sold vinyl siding and it really boils down to what you are willing to pay. This is an item you need to shop for, get several bids and check their references.
