14.5 Briggs & stratton engine on a Statesman riding mower won't start. It will turn over once then drag.?
Question:The battery is good. The starter is good. It has always dragged but then went on and fired up but now it won't.

Its probable your battery.Try charging it for a little while.
Sometimes the float on the carb sticks and gasoline flows into the crankcase. Then the crankcase is so full of mix of oil and gasoline it gets into the cylinder. That dipstick they give you with the engine, you can hardly detect oil level let alone something like this.
Since oil and gas mix is incompressible, thus the hard or impossible to turn over.
I have a 14.5 BriggsStratton on my garden tractor and it did exactly this same thing this spring. Hard to crank. I had to remove the carb sediment bowl and clean out the float And of course drain the crankcase and add clean oil. I found some sediment in the bowl, but nothing else. I then added a can of automotive carb cleaner to the gasoline and it has not done this since.
One other thing that might help you is a product called Miracle Oil Here in midwest, Menards handles it and it is an additive to both gasoline and oil What it does is makes sure the cylinder walls are never dry upon start up and lets the engine crank easier. I think it costs about $3 or $4 for a pint of the stuff but it is very good for hard to crank cars for which ive used it on.
If you are sure the battery is good, it sounds like the starter is the issue. You can remove it and take it apart and clean it. The brushes are replaceable and can be a bit tricky to get back into place. There are four of them and you don't have enough fingers so you will need some short pieces of stiff wire. You may as well put a new gear on the starter while you have it off.
