I have a briggs and stration 17.5 hp on my riding mower. Put it away last dec and it ran great.?
Question:I took it out last week and it starts but smokes a ton and then dies. I changed the fuel, fuel fiter and air filter, cleaned the carb and it still does it. Also it sees to spit oil/fuel? out the exhaust. It had no problems when I put it away. It's about 4yrs old.
Answers:
if you havent already , replace the needle, seat and float. If that dont cure the problem you may need to adjust the fuel air mixture screw. just a little at a time no more than 1/4 turn at a time and always remember where or mark its original setting before making adjustments of your own
Sounds like the float in the carb may be hanging, flooding the engine enough to stall out. Clean the carb again, paying special attention to the float swing and needle valve.
Black smoke is too much fuel (carb issue, clogged air filter)
White/blue is oil. either theres a leak (usually the dipstick) or the breather is faulty. or someone put oil in the gas!
Also can be thinned out oil from gas...
OR the worst thing you'd want to hear (If its a over head valve engine) blown head gasket... (they do blow in the thin spot and will cause them to puff like mad)
