How can I fix a sewer-like smell coming from my shower drain?
Question:We have tried pouring cleaning agents down it with no solution. Been like this for a long time.
Answers:
first make sure your sewer pipe isn't blocked
if that doesn't solve problem, then you should
check septic tank system
Stop crapping in the drain and use the toliet...
1 cup vinegar, 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup vinegar again. let it sit 15 min. Wash with a gallon of boiling water. If that doesn't remove the stink you should call a plumber. Some septic may be backed up. May need the septic tank emptied.
There is a flap in the toilet drain and if it stops working, it can allow the odors from the sewer drain to come back up into the house. Since most have the toilet, sink, and shower going out the same pipe, it also allows the odors to come back to these areas too. This might be your problem.
have you tryed bleach??
I've had a problem like that and used bleach.I just poured it in the drain hole & next day it was gone but comes back eventually so you may have to do it on a regular basis.Need to get to the root of the problem though.Sounds as though there's no ventilation on your sewer pipes which causes the smell to backup which is not good for your health either.
hope this helps.
What a childish answer from Nohas da or is it Duh? D. If you cant give a logical answer go pound salt! Any how, I think you need to check the trap. If the trap has a hole it will no longer hold water to keep the smell of the sewer out. If th trap is still good, try using baking soda and vinegar to remove the smell. Pour a little baking soda first then the vinegar. The foaming action will help disolve what ever is causing the smell. Hope this helps.
If there is a sewer smell coming from the drain it might be that the trap is not holding enough water to keep the smell from coming through the drain
I have to concur that this is a trap problem. I would not waste time and money dumping more chemicals down the drain.
Do you have a basement, or can you get to the drain plumbing for this shower to have a look? I wonder if there is a trap installed. The trap is a U shaped piece of pipe, should be located between where the pipe connects to the shower and the main line. If there is one there, have someone run water and check it for leaks. This can be a problem if the trap is in a crawl space and could freeze. Freezing could cause a hairline crack and allow the water to seep out over a period of time.
If there is no trap, you need to have one installed. You will not stop the smell without one.
Another possibility is a lack of venting in the drain line. If you pour a large amount of water down the drain at once, do you hear a sucking sound as the last bit goes down? This would indicate a venting problem. Best to call a plumber for that one.
Quit peeing in the shower. That's NASTY!
your trap is missing a dip tube. this is the tube that runs through the trap and keeps a small amount of water in the bottom. as long as you have water in the bottom smells will not get through.
cheers
I have fixed this problem many times. The problem is that a shower does not have enough water flow to properly clean out a drain trap as other fixtures in your house ie. toilet, lavatory sink, kitchen sink. This results in soap scum, shampoo, hair, and wash off to settle and foul up, causing a stink. The easiest thing to do is to fill a pail with hot water and give the shower a good flush to clean out trap. Also, drain cleaner poured down the drain will break away build up. The drain cover comes off,( push on or with screws) to scrape build up off the inside of pipe. This should help your problem, and every few months pour water down the drain.
A common reason is a slight clog, not allowing water to drain past the trap somewhere. Also the vent pipe (to the roof) might be blocked; excessive spider webs, debris, bird's nest.
