What is the expected lifespan of a TXV for a heat pump.?
Question:I have a Lennox unit that is 5yrs and 7mos old. I just had to replace both Thermostat Expansion Valves. I was told that they were not working properly and leaking freon from around the valve. Is this normal or did I get the shaft?
Answers:
It is unusual to ever have to replace a TXV because most often the condensing unit will need to be replaced before a TXV will go bad. They can go bad however but it is not normal. At 5 years I am sure you are out of warranty. As unfortunate as it is there is no way for you or anyone on the Internet to know if you are getting the shaft.
It almost always is worth a little extra money to contact a good service company with good references.
This is possible. Did you have an extended warranty on your unit? Or did it come with a manufacturer warranty? I would do more internet research to see if others were experiencing a bad TXV valve. This is like a throttling device, regulating the different stages of freon.
it sounds like you might have a leak but for the expansion valve to go bad that is rare, considering the age of unit i have seen units 30 years old with no problem, whoever installed your unit probably made a bad connection.when something is not working properly a repairmen will have a field day with you.they could say anything is wrong sometimes it is the circuit breaker, and they tell you that you need a new compressor, and charge you and never install it most people do not have any idea about ac.
You'r $20,000 car is in the shop the first week and you expect it. You'r $1,000 AC gives you trouble after 5 years and you think you got the shaft. It's made by man, not God.
