Re fishy smell?


Question:I would just like to inform you all that if you have a fishy smell in a room check your light bulb. I had this fishy smell that would arise in the middle of my room, i could literally walk through it. I have since found out it was cos i had a 100 watt light bulb, i have put a 60 watt bulb in and it has gone, just thought id let you all know

It is the phenol coming from the Bakelite fitting



It's a good ( though not intended) safety feature to show there is something wronge - hot!

Regardless of the smell, you should never use a light bulb of greater wattage than is recommended on the label fixed to the fixture. It is a fire hazard.
plastic light fittings are rated to prevent this problem, to prevent the plastic overheating and degenerating the specified wattage should not be exceeded
