Greenish doorknob?

Question:Recently I noticed a greenish material on my doorknob. I'm sure it's not the metal corroding because I can scrape a little of it with my scissors. The texture reminds me of chalk dust. Does anyone know what this is and is there an easy way for me to remove it?

Answers:
This is the brass base material tarnishing. Any metal polish will remove it- so will a mixture of lemon juice and plain old table salt.

To mitigate the need for continuous polishing, after it is cleaned (and well dried) you can use some clear spray lacquer to cover the knob and prevent corrosion. Be careful to mask the door to prevent overspray.

Best of luck.

Is it a brass doorknob? If so just give it a polish and it'll fine.
Any hardware store in your area should carry the polish known as "Brasso" apply sparingly to the entire doorknob and buff wih a clean dry rag or old pair of nylon stockings. Once dry, follow the previous advice by either masking your door or removing the doorknob and apply a clear spray paint or lacquer to avoid further corrosion
