Why do I keep getting shocked everytime I touch my light swith?
Question:Every time I touch I light switch I get a little shock ANd every now and then I see little sparks! this only happens upstairs does anyone know why this is happening and what I can do to fix it?
Answers:
It is time to call an electrician- in the mean time, turn the breaker off that services the switch.
If you choose to look in the box- and it is a risky thing to do, so insert powerful disclaimer here... make sure that the breaker is OFF.
You could have a short between the frame of the switch or box and the hot side of the circuit, loose wiring moving around can cause the screws on the faceplate or the box its self to be live.
Little sparks and shocks are bad- and can lead to serious injury, so please be careful.
Best of luck.
UPDATE: I must humbly bow to itsmyitch... simple answers first... a static electricity buildup would do just what you have described. My answer only applies if its not due to static build up. itsmyitch- next time you're in Tulsa, I owe you a beer (or non-alcoholic beverage of your choice...)
Stop using it immediatly and call an electrician. You are in danger of having a house fire!
You switched the wires. Turn off your power and switch the wires.
Do you have hardwood floors upstairs and not down? It may be static electricity.
Could be static but it could also be a short. Get an electrician before you need the paramedics or the firemen.
cause you keep touching it, stop it . causes are the switch is failing (carbon tracking) and not grounded properly or one of the current carring conductors is hooked to or touching the ground lug PROPERLY GROUNDED SWITCHES DO NOT SHOCK THEY TRIP BREAKERS, SPARKS IN THE DARK IS MOST COMMON.
