Water leaking periodically from freezer to refrigerator on left side?
Question:Should I repair or replace after 20 years? How long does a refrigerator last?
Answers:
Check the pan underneath the refrigerator for water. That is the drain pan that collects the water from the defrost cycle. If the pan is dry the drain hose within the refrigerator is likely clogged and needs to be cleaned out.
Consumer Reports does a "Repair or Replace" article every year or two. Consult that in your local library to see what they recommend about repairing/replacing a refrigerator.
Your problem is probably very simple to fix.
Under the fridge is a small box that is a defrost timer. At a certain interval, it turns on heating wires in the freezer and defrosts it. The water runs to the bottom of the freezer, where there is a drain. The drain leads to a pan under the refrigerator. If you look under there, you will find it.
It is likely that your problem is a clogged drain. The link will give you lots of ideas on uncloging it.
