Know anything about a job replacing electric meters?
Question:I have an interview scheduled for a job replacing ALL the electric meters for a large utlility company. $12.00 dollars an hour plus so much per meter. I'm guessing 1 or 2 dollars additional per meter.
Pay sounds kind of low for what could be fairly difficult and maybe even dangerous (?) work. Anybody know anything about replacing meters?
Answers:
There will be a certain amount of hazard as meters are usually changed with the socket hot. Newer meter sockets have a bypass feature that makes it a bit better, but care is still required. As long as you pay attention, I would not be worried.
The bigger hazard would be from dogs, angry customers and such.
$12.00 per hour does seem a bit low but the per meter bonus could add up fairly quickly. Changing a meter should not take more than a few minutes, unless you have to deal with the aforementioned dogs and/or angry customers. Your drive time between will impact the amount you are able to get done. In a rural setting, you may have a few minutes drive between meters, but in an urban setting you should be able to change 6 - 8 per hour. That could add up.
Also, are you furnishing your own ride, or do you get a company truck? If you have to furnish your own, do you get paid for mileage? This could make a difference as well.
all they do is just plug in but you are working around 'hot' or live electrical wires better be careful as you wont be able to turn it off
